When Aspen quiets down between the seasons, the valley doesn't. Eighteen miles down-valley in Basalt, Alpine House keeps the lights on, the steins cold, and the kitchen turning out some of the most comforting food in the Roaring Fork Valley. If you're looking for where to spend a long weekend — Memorial Day included — this is the room.

Why down-valley, why now

Aspen's restaurant scene runs on a seasonal clock. Between the ski season and the summer rush, a good number of the town's tables go dark for a few weeks. Basalt doesn't play by those rules. The locals come back to their own restaurants, the patios open, and a quiet weekend down here turns out to be one of the better trips in the whole valley.

Alpine House sits right on Market Street in the heart of Basalt — an easy, twenty-minute drive from Aspen, and worth every mile. The room is warm and unfussy: soft lighting, mountain artwork, a welcoming bar, and a patio that comes into its own the moment the weather turns.

What to order

The kitchen celebrates the rich traditions of Austrian-Bavarian cooking, and it does so without cutting corners. Start with the hand-twisted Bavarian pretzel — golden, dusted with flaky sea salt, and served with beer cheese and whole-grain mustard. It's built for sharing over a first round.

From there, the classics earn their reputation. The Wiener Schnitzel arrives golden-brown and crisp, with lingonberry jam and a squeeze of lemon — a true Alpine favorite. The Schweinshaxen, a slow-roasted pork shank with crackling skin and rich pan gravy over sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, is the kind of plate that makes a long lunch worth lingering over. Don't overlook the goulash or the salmon tartare either — both regulars on the locals' order.

A serious wine list

Alpine House pours better than a Bavarian room needs to. By the glass, the reds run from an easy-drinking Malbec and Côtes du Rhône to a California Cabernet and an Oregon Pinot Noir — all in the $11–$14 range. When the occasion calls for it, the cellar runs deep: Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Amarone, and a Maillart Champagne for the table that wants to mark the moment. There's a daily happy hour, too, and a thoughtfully chosen beer list if a cold stein is more your speed.

What makes a room is the people who run it, and Alpine House is in good hands. Nenad and Vlada are restaurateurs who've been in the business since 2008, the year they came to make their home in Aspen. Both grew up in small towns in Serbia — places with deep culinary tradition — before spending years working the cruise lines, where they cooked and served their way around the world. That experience, gathered across oceans, is what they've brought home to this corner of Basalt.

They are, first and foremost, hosts. You'll often find them moving between the tables, taking a moment to talk with guests and steer them toward the best of what the kitchen and cellar have to offer that night. Nenad is the sommelier of the pair — the one to ask when you want the right pour for your table. Vlada is the cook's cook, a true gourmand whose goulash is the real, slow-simmered thing. Between the two of them, you're in the hands of people who genuinely love feeding a room.

Their ambitions don't stop at one address, either. The two also run Aspen Peak Transport, a private limo and airport service that gets guests up and down the valley in comfort. And there's more on the way: Nenad has a pizzeria in the works for downtown Aspen, while Vlada is planning a smash-dash burger spot up in Snowmass Village — which, fittingly, would make it the highest smash-dash burger in the United States. Both are coming soon. For now, though, all of that hard-won knowledge from small Serbian kitchens to the open sea lives right here, on Market Street in Basalt.

Make it a Memorial Day tradition

Alpine House is open Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 — and the long weekend is the perfect excuse to come down-valley. With temperatures around the high 60s and the patio open, it's made for an unhurried afternoon: a pretzel, a glass of something good, and no reason to rush back up the hill. Reservations are easy through OpenTable, and the room books up on holiday weekends, so it's worth planning ahead.
